Cruise Ship Pier
Location: British Virgin Islands
Client: BVI Ports Authority
In a joint venture with Belvedere Place Contracting and Meridian Construction, JVD International completed this design/build pier expansion in Tortola, British Virgin Islands.
This project included dredging Road Town harbor to 40 feet and lengthening and widening the existing cruise ship pier to accommodate larger and more modern cruise ships. The team retained BEA Architects who had to consider design conflicts with existing piles while providing additional strengthening to berth the larger ships. The project was fast-tracked with one side of the pier completed in only seven months and total construction in only 14 months. Construction highlights include self-performing pre-cast concrete elements, hard dredging, and piling of 208 piles ranging from 24”- 48” diameter over 200’ long.
About 100,000 cubic yards was dredged and used to create approximately four acres of land adjacent to the pier. Work included shoreline protection and a passenger boardwalk to access a new cruise ship passenger amenities and retail venues.
