Nation Building Services

RELATIONSHIPS THAT CONTINUE THROUGH THE WORK

Start with the Nation’s priorities and decision-making.

Nation Building Services (NBS) works alongside Indigenous leadership, administrations and development organizations on the decisions and day-to-day work behind their priorities. Its support spans capital projects, business development and the management of growing organizations. Experienced people work with the Nation’s team to deliver the immediate assignment while helping strengthen the skills and systems it can carry forward.

RESPECT IN EVERYDAY PRACTICE

Work in ways that fit the community.

NBS works with leadership, project teams and community members to understand the Nation’s protocols and expectations. Those requirements inform how people are recruited, how decisions are made and how work is coordinated. Regular discussion and shared information help the relationship continue beyond a single contract.

WORKING APPROACH

From priorities to visible progress.

01

Understand the starting point

Review the Nation’s objectives, available people and businesses, project readiness and the decisions that need support.

02

Agree who decides and who delivers

Set out responsibilities, review steps and approval authority so the Nation, advisors and contractors understand their roles.

03

Stay involved in the work

Participate in coordination and lookahead meetings; follow safety, inspection, schedule, cost and participation requirements.

04

Review progress while it can still change

Use reporting every two weeks to show progress, emerging concerns and required action. Review local participation throughout the job, while there is still time to improve it.

WORKING WITH THE NATION’S TEAM

Continuity when a project needs a path forward.

At Piikani, the documented role was advisory: assess the facility, review records, maintain regular coordination and help the Nation’s team focus on the remaining closeout requirements. The 2024 report describes progress toward opening, with approvals still pending at that time.

CAPABILITY FOR THE NEXT OPPORTUNITY

Build systems and experience the Nation can use again.

Alongside delivery, NBS helps teams assess the work they could undertake, the partnerships that could support it and potential sources of business revenue. The focus is on practical readiness: people, operating systems, financial visibility and a clear view of risk. At Frog Lake, the concrete-enterprise work provides a tangible example of connecting a current project with a longer-term business objective.

Project examples reflect the supplied 2024–2025 Hillcore/JV Driver Nation Building Program reports. Each story identifies the role, reporting period and stage reached.
